Coming up through the vibrant Bay Area music scene, Scott Sorkin is a multifaceted guitarist who seamlessly navigates the worlds of jazz, Brazilian and Latin styles, and American roots music. As an accomplished guitarist, arranger, composer, producer, recording engineer, teacher, and clinician, Scott's diverse expertise and deep musical understanding have made him a highly respected figure in the music community.
Bio
Scott's solo CD, "Laika," showcases his unique artistry and is available for streaming on Apple Music. He is also the co-leader of the international jazz group Crossing Borders, featuring Kristen Strom, Jennifer Scott, and Rene Worst, an ensemble that has toured extensively across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Beyond his performance and recording career, Scott is a dedicated educator. He is a valued member of the music faculty at Chabot College in Hayward, CA, and has served as a clinician for prestigious institutions such as the Stanford Jazz Workshop, San Jose Jazz Summer Camp, Stanford University, and San Jose State University, among many others. He is also a co-founder of the South Bay Summer Jazz Intensive, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
Scott's impressive performance credits include sharing the stage with legendary artists like the Count Basie Orchestra, Mary Wilson (The Supremes), Nnenna Freelon, Ruthie Foster, Shemekia Copeland, Paula West, Louie Bellson, Steve Turre & Michael Turre, Peter Stoltzman, Taylor Eigsti, Joe Gilman, Ndugu Chancler, and Larry Grenadier. He has also contributed his talents to touring shows like "Dream Girls" and Disney's "Newsies," and has performed with The Silicon Valley Symphony (Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Igor Stravinsky’s Agon, Rhapsody In Blue, The Threepenny Opera, Lord of the Rings, Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton). His artistry has graced renowned venues and festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, Yoshi's, and the Festival International De Jazz De Montreal.
As a recording artist, Scott's discography is extensive, featuring collaborations with Jerry Miller and Don Stevens (Moby Grape), Ray Obiedo, John Stowell, and numerous other acclaimed jazz and pop artists. His work as a producer, composer, and arranger extends to film scores, including the feature film *Fat Rose & Squeaky*. In recognition of his compositional talent, Scott was awarded a composition grant from the San Jose Jazz 2024 Jazz Aid Fund program.
Scott's holistic approach to improvisation, which he describes as a balance between theoretical understanding and intuitive "ear" playing, informs both his performances and his teaching. This philosophy is further elaborated in his published works, "Surfing the Changes: A Systematic And Fun Approach To Jazz Improvisation For All Instruments" and "Hip to Jazz Improvisation Method," co-written for the San Jose Jazz Society. With a career marked by continuous exploration and a passion for sharing his knowledge, Scott Sorkin remains a dynamic and influential force in the world of music.
