I'm going to use these pages to introduce some concepts from time to time that I have found useful in my musical development. We've each of us achieved a level of musical understanding by “standing on the shoulders of giants”, whether by listening to and absorbing the language of Miles and Coltrane, or by hanging out with a great local player. I'll try to offer proper acknowledgement where I have gained insight by virtue of my feet being planted squarely between an individual's shoulder blades. Lesson 1: Increasing your Chord Vocabulary through Diatonic Transposition (Quoting guitarist Ed Harris, "If you don't transpose diatonically the voicings you already know how do you come up with new voicings?"). Lesson 2: Warm Ups: Just like an athlete, you want to warm up before you hit the gridiron, or stage, as the case may be. These exercises should help your picking motion to be smooth and even. |
